Once there lived a poor farmer in a small village. He was very honest and hardworking, but he could hardly maintain his family. One day, while working in his farm, he was surprised to find a goose. To his astonishment, the goose laid a golden egg the next morning. The farmer sold the egg in the market and earned a good amount of money. From then on, the goose laid one golden egg every day. Gradually, the farmer became solvent and started living happily with his family.

But human wants know no bounds. The farmer was not satisfied with only one egg a day. Greed took hold of him. He thought, “Why should I wait every day for just one egg? If I kill the goose, I will get all the golden eggs at once and become the richest man in the village.” At last, blinded by greed, he killed the goose. To his great shock, he found no golden eggs inside. Instead, he lost his valuable goose forever.

The farmer realized his foolishness, but it was too late. By trying to get everything at once, he lost both the goose and the golden eggs. He became poor again and lived a life of sorrow.

 একসময় এক দরিদ্র কৃষক ছিল। সে সৎ এবং পরিশ্রমী হলেও পরিবারের খরচ কোনোভাবে চালাতে পারত। একদিন মাঠে কাজ করার সময় সে একটি হাঁস পেল। আশ্চর্যের বিষয় হলো, হাঁসটি পরের দিন সকালে একটি সোনার ডিম পাড়ল। কৃষক সেই ডিম বিক্রি করে ভালো টাকা পেল। এরপর থেকে প্রতিদিন হাঁসটি একটি করে সোনার ডিম দিতে লাগল। ধীরে ধীরে কৃষক অভাব থেকে মুক্ত হয়ে সুখে-শান্তিতে বসবাস করতে লাগল।

কিন্তু মানুষের চাহিদা সীমাহীন। কৃষক প্রতিদিন একটি সোনার ডিম পেয়ে খুশি হলেও সন্তুষ্ট থাকল না। তার মনে লোভ জন্ম নিল। সে ভাবতে লাগল—“প্রতিদিন একটি ডিম পেয়ে কী হবে? যদি হাঁসটিকে মেরে ফেলি তবে একসাথে সব সোনার ডিম পেয়ে যাব এবং এক রাতেই গ্রামের সবচেয়ে ধনী মানুষ হয়ে উঠব।” অবশেষে কৃষক লোভের বশবর্তী হয়ে হাঁসটিকে হত্যা করল।

কিন্তু হাঁসের পেটে কোনো সোনার ডিম ছিল না। বরং সে তার মূল্যবান হাঁসটিকেও হারাল এবং প্রতিদিনের সোনার ডিম পাওয়ার সুযোগ থেকেও বঞ্চিত হলো। কৃষক তখন নিজের ভুল বুঝতে পারল, কিন্তু তখন আর কিছু করার ছিল না। শেষমেশ সে আবার দরিদ্র হয়ে গেল এবং দুঃখ-কষ্টে জীবন কাটাতে লাগল।

নীতিকথা: সব পেতে চাইলে সব হারাতে হয়। লোভ মানুষকে সর্বনাশের পথে ঠেলে দেয়।
